If you don’t have much time to stay in Cusco, then join our 1-day excursion to Machu Picchu by train leaving from the Ollantaytambo railway station (the only-one Inca living city located in the sacred valley of the Incas).

How do I get to Ollantaytambo to take my train?

We’ll pick you up at your hotel in Cusco city (very early in the morning) to take you to Ollantaytambo city by bus, the bus ride lasts about 2 hours, it’s suggested to be at the Ollantaytambo railway station half an hour before your train departure time.

From Ollantaytambo station to Aguas Calientes by train:

At Ollantaytambo train station, we’ll take either PeruRail or IncaRail train company towards the city of Aguas Calientes, the train ride takes about 2 hours. In Aguas Calientes, you’ll have a few minutes of free time on your own.

From Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu ruins + guided tour:

In Aguas Calientes city, make your way on your own to the bus station for Machu Picchu ruins, the bus ride along the Hiram Bingham highway takes approximately 30 minutes; be at the main entrance door to the Inca citadel at 11 am, our tour guide will be there waiting for you.

You’ll be a guided tour of the Machu Picchu Inca citadel from about 11 am to 1 pm, afterwards, you are going to have free time photograph and walk on your own within the ruins. After this awe-inspiring experience, you must return on your own to Aguas Calientes city to board your train to Ollantaytambo.

At Ollantaytambo train station, we’ll be waiting for you with a vehicle to return to Cusco city.

Full Itinerary

The route below may change because of strikes, weather issues, festivities, available train departures and available schedules to access the ruins of Machu Picchu | The departure and arrival times are completely referential.

  • 5 am: Pick up at your hotel in Cusco city
  • Cusco to Ollantaytambo by bus: 2 hours bus ride
  • 7 am: Arrival at Ollantaytambo and you will board your train on your own
  • 7 am to 9 am: Travel by train to Aguas Calientes city, alongside the rail road, you’ll see the entire Andean and Amazonian landscape of Cusco
  • 9 am: Arrival at Aguas Calientes city, afterwards, you’ll take some free time to have breakfast or walk on your own (there won’t be any reception at the Ollantaytambo train station — consider that the city is extremely small, getting lost is impossible)
    10 am: Make your way to Consettur bus station in Aguas Calientes city to go up to Machu Picchu ruins
  • 10:30 am: Arrival outside the ruins of Machu Picchu
  • 11 am: Our guide will be waiting for you at the main access door to Machu Picchu ruins, all the details on how to identify your guide will be sent to you by mail internally
  • 11 am to 1 pm: Guided tour of Machu Picchu ruins
  • Free time
  • 2 pm: Return to Aguas Calientes by bus on your own
  • Lunch on your own in Aguas Calientes
  • 5 pm: Board your train (Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo) on your own — be at the train station 1 hour in advance
  • 7 pm: Arrival at Ollantaytambo station — we’ll wait for you at the train station with a vehicle
  • 7 am to 9 pm: Bus ride to return to Cusco city
  • 9 pm: Arrival in Cusco, our vehicle will drop you off two blocks away from the Plaza de Armas of Cusco (not at your hotel)
  • Note: If you want a private tour, we can adjust your itinerary: Pick-up and drop-off times at your hotel, meal, inclusions, type of train wagons, etc.
